How To Deep Clean Your Bathroom | TMG Companies

How To Deep Clean Your Bathroom | TMG Companies

Bathrooms are where the cleaning challenges can really get tough. There are so many surfaces: chrome, brass, glass, porcelain, fiberglass … plus a wide variety of soils: hard water deposits, soap film, rust stains and mildew, not to mention germs. An assortment of effective cleaning products is available for these jobs.

Rinse the tub after each use to keep soap film and hard water deposits from forming. Keep a small sponge handy for wiping down the tub walls after bathing. Use a towel or a squeegee on shower walls. Dry faucets and handles to prevent water spots.

Keep shower doors and curtains open after use to allow them to air dry and prevent mildew. If mildew does appear, use liquid household bleach or cleaners with bleach to remove stains.

Use a daily shower cleaner to keep shower and tub surfaces free of soap scum, mildew stains and hard water deposits. Mist surfaces right after showering while the walls are wet and warm – no rinsing, wiping or scrubbing is necessary. For best results, start with a clean shower. Check label directions to be sure the product is suitable for your bathtub/shower surface.
To clean vertical surfaces where cleaners can run off quickly (bathtubs, showers, toilet bowls), spray foams and thick liquids are effective.
Consider using a disinfectant cleaner for toilet bowls, tubs and showers.
Only products that have an EPA registration number on the label have met government requirements for killing germs. It’s important to follow label instructions to be sure you are getting the germ-killing benefits.
Avoid using products containing bleach to remove rust stains as they may intensify the color. Use only a rust remover for such stains.

Bathtub and Sinks

For stubborn stains or soap film buildup, allow the cleaner to thoroughly penetrate the soil, then rub or scour.

Shower

Glass shower doors and mirrors require non-streaking cleaning products for best results.

Toilet

Interior are susceptible to the buildup of hard water deposits. Use a long-handled toilet brush to clean the rim holes and as far into the trap as possible.
Exteriors can be scratched.
Plastic toilet seats can be scratched.
Thoroughly rinse and dry hinge areas and bumpers.

Post Holiday Clean Up 101 | TMG Companies

Post Holiday Clean Up 101 | TMG Companies

You blinked and the holidays are over. The dust settles, and you finally have some time to breathe, but now it is time to clean up all the post-holiday things. But where to start? It can get overwhelming thinking about where to begin especially when you start to think about all the areas of the home that have been in overdrive. Did you cook holiday dinner or bake cookies and holiday treats? Then your kitchen is due for a deep clean. Did you spend a lot of time in the living room hosting friends & family, watching holiday movies with the family, or opening presents? You living room has probably seen more action than normal and needs a refresh.

Here are some tips to help get your home back in order after a busy holiday season:

Declutter

We all tend to accumulate stuff during the holiday season. And while it is always great to give gifts, it isn’t always so great to find your kitchen full of used storage containers, your trash bins full of waste, and your storage areas full of unwanted decorations and odds-’n-ends.

But decluttering doesn’t just mean throwing everything out the door. It means lightening your load and preparing for warmer weather. When decluttering, think lighter:

  1. Get rid of all your trash, including all the wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows that you don’t need. You don’t need to prepare for next year’s Christmas before the new year.
  2. Return any old food containers left over from parties. You don’t need them, and you don’t want them. If the original owner refuses (or continually forgets) to take them, then trash or donate them.
  3. Store your decorations, tree, and other holiday items correctly, and put them away no later than 18 days after Christmas. That includes exterior lights and law decorations.

Finally, give your home items a good once over to assess if there is anything that could be donated or thrown away. The new year is a time for declutter and rebirth, so take the opportunity after the holidays to clear the decks.

Kitchen Appliances

You’ve held your parties, you’ve cooked for company, and you’ve baked dozens of cakes, pies, and cookies. Now it is time to step back from the festivities and deep clean your kitchen.

After all that cooking, take time to clean out all your appliances. This includes

  • The inside of your refrigerator and freezer.
  • The external parts of your mixers and blenders.
  • The interior and exterior of your oven and dishwasher.
  • The sink, including the under-sink area.
  • The interior and exterior of your cabinets and drawers.

You can use a disinfecting cleaner or a basic mix of baking soda, vinegar, and water. There are also several natural cleaners that can provide the level of cleanliness and odor protection you need. We normally try to avoid harsh cleaning chemicals on any surface.

In any case, scrub all these surfaces down. You don’t want to come across food stains or worse a month down the road. Take the opportunity to make your kitchen new and feel good again.

Upholstery and Furniture

You and your family have been sitting on your furniture all winter. And, if you’ve hosted during the holidays, it’s been more than just your family. And let’s not even get into pet odors.

It’s time to get your upholstery cleaned.

In all honesty, this is something you should do 1-2 times a year at minimum, so post-holiday season is usually a great time to do it. Since your windows have been most likely shut against the cold for months, with the heater running, and your family (and any party guests) regularly in residence, your furniture will most likely need cleaned.

For DIY, you can

  • Vacuum all your fabric furniture. This will help remove any errant dirt, hair, and stains.
  • Spot clean any stains. Long-lasting wine or grape stains probably won’t come out after the fact, but it doesn’t hurt to try and remove some dirt beforehand.
  • Spray with a mixture of water and essential oils. Using diluted essential oils can freshen up fabrics before they are cleaned and keep your living and entertaining spaces smelling pleasant. We recommend fresh and clean scents like mint, lemon, or fresh herbs.

Of course, you should also call your furniture cleaning specialist. They can help get smells and stains out of your furniture and keep it fresh for the upcoming spring.

Area Rugs

Like furniture, area rugs are going to accumulate stains, dirt, and odor. And like your furniture, there are a few at-home steps you can take to get them clean.

A simple thing to do is to let them sit outside. Pick a warm day with no rain, and gently shake your rugs out and hang them on a balcony. This will not only remove dust, but also help remove odor. Following that, you can attempt to clean the rug yourself (and it helps if the rug is washable). However, washing and cleaning can be hard on your rug if you don’t have the right equipment.

Clean Your Fridge Like A Pro | TMG Companies

Clean Your Fridge Like A Pro | TMG Companies

The refrigerator is one of your house’s most used and abused appliances. It is constantly being open and closed. During holidays, it is packed. Sometimes, even on regular days, the fridge is always full. But be honest,  how bad are you at neglecting my fridge. Most homeowners hardly do the proper care to maintain this helpful appliance. So before you fill your fridge up with all the holiday fixings here are some tips to properly care and clean your fridge.

  1. Gather the tools for the task before you start cleaning. You will need the following; trash bag, recycle bin, dry microfiber cleaning cloth, dish soap, baking soda, warm water, sponge, cooler (if deep cleaning), and small toothbrush for the hard-to-reach crevices (bleach or vinegar optional) and vacuum with a brush. I love using the vacuum to capture the small food debris in hard-to-reach corners.
  2. First, you have to unplug the refrigerator. Use the vacuum brush to clean the coils, drip pan, and the panel in front of the refrigerator. Next, empty the fridge. The frozen food should go to the cooler. While removing the food, check for expiration. Discard the old and expired. Use the recycle bin for the expired condiment and the garbage bag for the non-recyclable items.
  3. Once the fridge is empty, remove the shelves. Use warm water and dish soap to clean the refrigerator. Submerge the sponge in the solution and wipe the inside of the fridge from top to bottom. Wash the removable shelves using the water and soap solution from the sink. Loosen any hardened food stain using the sponge or the small brush. Rinse with fresh warm water using the sponge. Dry the refrigerator using a microfiber cleaning cloth. Replace the old baking soda with a new, freshly open box.
  4. To finish up, clean the top of the refrigerator and the front. Pay extra attention to the door handle. Use a damp, wet microfiber cleaning cloth to remove the dirt. Plug the refrigerator and return the food. Now you have a happy refrigerator.

Enjoy the Holidays and Avoid Fire Hazards | TMG Companies

Enjoy the Holidays and Avoid Fire Hazards | TMG Companies

Fall and winter holidays are exciting times to gather with family and friends, enjoy traditional decorations and eat special foods. Unfortunately, these holiday festivities can also present unique fire hazards. More residential fires happen during the colder months of the year, and are primarily caused by cooking, heating, and electrical malfunctions, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
A house fire will certainly take the joy out of celebrating the holidays, so take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of your home and your guests. No matter what holidays you celebrate, consider these important steps for staying safe and preventing fires.

1. Cook With Care

Fourty-seven percent of home fires start while cooking, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Although cooking with care is always important, it can be easy to neglect caution during the chaotic holiday preparations. More cooks – and more pots – in the kitchen can increase the risk of a fire. On Thanksgiving Day 2015, fire departments reported 1,760 cooking-related home fires, a 259 percent increase over a typical day, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). On Christmas Day and Christmas Eve the same year, the numbers of cooking fires were 72 and 52 percent higher than normal, respectively.
Be sure to stay in the kitchen when you have something cooking on the stovetop or in the oven. The NFPA recommends keeping pan lids close by so that if a fire starts you can quickly cover it with the lid and remove the pan from the burner. When food preparation is finished, turn off the burners and remove the pans, as the stovetop can remain hot.

2. Pay Attention to Indoor Decorations

When decorating indoors, test all lights and cords and replace any faulty products before use. Hang indoor lights with clips rather than nails to avoid damaging cords and never use decorations intended for outdoor use only inside your home. If you burn candles indoors, keep them away from children and always extinguish them before you leave the room or go to sleep.
Place Christmas trees or seasonal plants at least three feet away from any heat source and turn off any decorative lights prior to leaving your home or going to sleep. Never use real candles to light a tree and water a live tree every day to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. When the holiday ends or the tree becomes dry, get rid of it. Do not leave a live, dried out tree in the garage or near your house, as they are highly combustible.

3. Use Outdoor Light Displays Responsibly

Many people show their holiday spirit with outdoor light displays. If you decorate outside, use only electrical decorations and extension cords manufactured for outdoor use. Keep the cords and lights away from snow or standing water and avoid damage to the cord's insulation by ensuring it is not pinched in doors or windows or placed under furniture. Also when installing outdoor lights, use a ladder made of wood or fiberglass, as metal ladders can conduct electricity.

4. Don't Forget Lighters and Matches

An open flame can pose serious risks if handled improperly. Always keep lighters, matches, and other fire-starting materials away from children. Make sure holiday guests who smoke do so outside and properly dispose of cigarette butts and ashes – by dampening cigarette butts before throwing them in the trash, for example.
Exercise caution if using a fireplace or an outdoor fire pit. Gathering family and friends around a fire can be a cozy, enjoyable way to experience the colder weather but make sure you place the fire pit at least 10 feet away from your home or other structures and don't use it in windy weather, as the fire can quickly spread outside the intended area.
Have your chimney inspected prior to using a wood-burning fireplace and only burn dry firewood that has been out of the rain for several months. Green or damp wood, when burned, can create additional dangers as it sizzles and smokes. Also avoid a common holiday decorating mistake by never hanging stockings or other dangling decorations in front of a working fireplace.

Load The Dishwasher the “Right” Way | TMG Companies

Load The Dishwasher the "Right" Way | TMG Companies

Ideally, there shouldn’t be a right way or a wrong way to clean – as long as someone is actually cleaning! But, many a fight has been had over the proper way to load a dishwasher. So here are some handy tips to keep the dishes clean, and families intact.

  • For dishwashers made in the past 10 years, simply scrape off food. You do not need to rinse. This wastes water. Many dishwashers have a "quick rinse" setting that will take the place of rinsing in the sink (and, again, save water.)
  • Don’t overload the dishwasher. Make sure the dirty part of every dish, bowl, plate and glass has a clear path to the sprayer arm.
  • It’s safer to put knives and forks head down in the cutlery bin, but they get cleaner head up.
  • Speaking of cutlery, don’t "nest." Meaning, don’t put spoons with spoons and forks with forks. Mix them up so they get cleaner.
  • Load dishes along the back and sides so that they face the middle of the dishwasher.
  • Glassware, coffee mugs and plastic ware should go on the top rack. There is higher water pressure on the bottom which could break some glasses, and the water on the bottom is higher temperatures, which could melt the plastic.
  • Empty the bottom rack first so that any water that pools in the glass and cups bottoms doesn’t spill onto the dry dishes.
  • Always load glasses and mugs upside down.

Cleaning vs. Disinfecting | TMG Companies

Cleaning vs. Disinfecting | TMG Companies

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces can go a long way in preventing the spread of illnesses, but how do you know which needs to be done and if you’re doing it correctly? The key is in knowing the difference between the two and what is required for each.

Cleaning

This involves removing dirt from a surface. It’s usually what you’re doing when washing with soap and water. It may not kill bacteria or viruses, but it sends them down the drain, or wiped off on a paper towel or cloth that gets thrown away or washed.

Disinfecting

When disinfecting, you’re actually killing germs. For coronavirus, this can be done by using one of the products approved by the EPA for this use. The surface may not look any cleaner, but it can reduce the spread of illness.

Which Should You Do?

The best way to reduce the spread of germs, especially if someone in the home is ill, is to do BOTH. Clean the surface first to remove dirt and grime, then disinfect. Check the product label to see how long you need to let the surface air dry before wiping. Once dry, if disinfecting food contact surfaces or toys, rinse with water.

Dust or Vacuum First? | TMG Companies

Dust or Vacuum First? | TMG Companies

Even when you are using the best duster, a few particles of dust are going to escape as you work. The dust that flies into the air will eventually settle at a lower point. Usually, that's the floor. That offers you a second chance to remove it from the room when you vacuum. Dusting first is particularly important if it has been some time since you dusted. The duster will become filled with particles and large clumps of dust will drop to the floor.

The Best Cleaning Order for Any Room

Remove the Clutter

It is nearly impossible to dust or vacuum effectively or efficiently if you are having to dodge around stacks of paper, toys, piles of laundry, or too many knick-knacks. Start at one side of the room and work your way around gathering items that are out of place. Keep a trash bag handy for items that need to be tossed and a basket or box for things that belong in another room.

Start at the Top

By working from the top of the room, you can slowly bring down the dust and cobwebs. Start with dusting hard-to-reach ceiling fans, light fixtures, corners, and the tops of tall furniture. Move down to mantles, tabletops, windowsills, baseboards, and furniture legs. You may need to do more than just dust; some surfaces will need to be cleaned more thoroughly with an appropriate cleaner. Continue to work down the room wiping and dusting every surface until you reach the floor.

To capture the most dust:

  • Use the vacuum's soft upholstery brush attachment and hose to vacuum the ceiling and then the walls—then use it on your upholstered furniture.
  • Use an electrostatic duster or slightly dampened microfiber cloth to clean surfaces.
  • If you can, wait at least 15 minutes after dusting before vacuuming the room. This gives the dust particles in the air time to settle on the floor.

Vacuum the Floor

Now that all the dust has settled on the floor, it's time to vacuum. To get the best results when you vacuum, be sure all of the clutter is off the floor. Move as much of the furniture as you can away from the walls, so you can reach the corners and the floor underneath.

Depending on the type of flooring, adjust the vacuum settings. When vacuuming a carpet, make sure the beater bar or roller brush is making contact with the surface of the fibers.

Start along one side of the room. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, use the crevice tool to clean between the carpet and the baseboards. Work in a grid pattern using long, smooth strokes down the path of the wall. Overlap the passes slightly and continue to the opposite wall. Now, do a 90-degree turn and repeat the process. Vacuuming the area twice will capture the most soil.

Tips to Reduce Dust in Your Home

  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Change HVAC air filters frequently.
  • Change bedding and wash it at least weekly.
  • Remove clutter and dust trappers like faux plants, fuzzy throws, and shag carpets.
  • Add an air purifier.
  • Bathe pets frequently.

Uh-oh Did You Just Find Gum Stuck In Your Carpet?| TMG Companies

\Uh-oh Did You Just Find Gum Stuck In Your Carpet?| TMG Companies

When you have kids you most likely see gum end up all over the place, including in the couches or even in more likely, your carpet. Now getting that gum out can be really tough and the longer it's there the harder it gets because it gets more and more embedded into the fabric and becomes stiff. Once you see the gum it's time to act! However you need to move cautiously or bad things can happen such as tearing out carpet etc. There are many methods to getting out the gum in your carpet, below are a few. However, if you don't have the time or aren't successful in removing, Call on your local professional carpet cleaners at TMG Companies to get the job done!

Freeze the Gum Out

Get your ice cubes ready! One of the easiest ways to get gum out of fabric is to first freeze it. Grab a bag and fill it with ice or you might be able to use a bag of peas. However, we recommend a plastic zip lock bag because there is nothing in it. Sometimes a bag of frozen peas has the print on it run off and now you have a colored carpet!

Place the Ice on the gum and leave it for about 30 minutes. Once the gum is frozen and hard, pull the gum up with your fingertips or a dull knife or spoon. Cold gum becomes less sticky and brittle and will allow you to break it up from the carpet more easily. Do this very carefully. You don’t want to pull fibers out of the carpet. A small amount of dish soap can be blotted on the carpet to break down and remove the remaining residue. .

Heat the Gum Out

Put a clean cloth over the gum. Then grab hair dryer to heat the area and loosen up the gum. As the gum softens, it should start to stick to the cloth. Be very careful not to overheat or melt carpet fibers. With extreme heat, you can actually cause your carpets to catch fire. While we are telling you this is an option, please do not try this at home. This method should definitely be left to a professional.

Use Solvents

Try using solvents to break down the gum instead. Most home improvement stores will carry some form of goo/gum remover solvent. Make sure the solvent is safe for the particular fabric by reading the instructions. Apply little solvent to the carpet and work it in gently with a brush. The gum should soften. Depending on the solution you bought it could it could dissolve the gum as well. Keep repeating but be careful not to overdue it and start breaking the carpet down. It also helps to have a powerful wet/ dry vacuum handy to suck up the residue as you go. Eliminate Remaining Gum Residue

Please keep in mind your best option to remove gum from your carpet or upholstery is to schedule an appointment with a professional carpet cleaning company. TMG specializes in removing all types of spots and stains from your carpet without damaging the fibers of your carpet. While the methods above can work, you run the risk of making the problem worse. If you are concerned, consult a professional before trying to tackle the problem on your own.

Got Pets? Here’s what you can do to keep your carpets clean

Got Pets? Here's what you can do to keep your carpets clean

If you have a pet, then it can be hard for you to keep your carpet clean. They beat your carpet up with dander, saliva and stains. They can also cause hair to build up in your carpet. The good news is that you can still get your carpet cleaned.

Clean Your Pet’s Paws Off

Clean off your peers paws before they come inside. Your pet won't love this but it's essential to keeping your carpet clean. They will eventually get used to getting their paws wiped before coming in the house.

Add an Area Rug

Put the area rug in a high-traffic area. Good news is it might even make it look better. Try making sure that your pet spends most of their time on the area rug and not the carpet.

Use a Pet-Friendly Carpet Cleaner

Make sure that you get the moisture and debris up first. After that, you will need to use pet-friendly carpet cleaner. Read the back of the bottle people!

Keep Your Pet Clean

Cleaning and grooming your pet will reduce the amount of hair and dander that ends up on the carpet.

Vacuum Your Carpet

Consistently vacuuming your carpet is detrimental to preventing dirt and hair from building up in the carpet. You may have to vacuum your carpet several times a week.

Minimize there Space

Make a designated pet area that you aren't that concerned about.

Trim those Nails

Long nails can snag the carpet. This can ruin the carpet fibers. Keep'em trimmed!

Hire a Carpet Cleaning Service

Tough carpet stains cannot always be removed with products that are purchased at the home improvement store. That is why it is important for you to hire a carpet cleaning service. We recommend having your carpets cleaned once per quarter.
