When was the last time you cleaned your kitchen cabinets? Everything in the kitchen gets regularly cleaned except the kitchen cabinets. You always wash your countertop, sink, stove, and the rest of the kitchen. One reason we hear was that the kitchen cabinets don’t get as dirty as the rest of the kitchen. Maybe right, but the cabinet, like any part of the house, needs a deep clean, even in a low-maintenance kitchen. How often? At least every six months for deep cleaning to avoid grease and dirt accumulation and a quick weekly touch-up on regular bases.

Before you clean your kitchen cabinets, first you must know some basic things about kitchen cabinets. Not all cabinets are created the same. Some cabinets are painted, others are not. Some cabinets have fancy knobs or handle; some don’t have one. Either way, you must be careful. The kitchen gets greasy and dirty most of the time from the cooking steam. The oil particles travel in the air and stick on the surface of the cabinets. Also, the handprints that we add during cooking. The amount of dirt from our hands while cooking transfers from cabinet to cabinet. And the handles get sticky and dirty.

With that said, let’s start with touch-up cleaning: (Once a week)

  1. Prepare the sink with warm water and a few drops of dishwashing soap.
  2. Use a terry towel cleaning cloth because it can remove the sticky dirt on the cabinet doors and handles.
  3. Have a dry microfiber cleaning towel ready to dry the cabinets.
  4. Grab a ladder to reach the top part of the cabinets.
  5. Submerge the terry towel in the water solution and wring it.
  6. Fold in two and use the ladder to reach the top part of the cabinets.
  7. Work one cabinet at a time. Start from the top left right left, making a zigzag back and forth.
  8. Use the dry microfiber to dry each cabinet. Use your hand to feel the surface.

This touch-up cleaning must be done regularly to lessen your time doing the cabinet deep cleaning.

For heavy deep cleaning of the cabinets:

  1. Add a degreaser and small toothbrush to your list of supplies.
  2. First, clean the cabinet using the touch-up method. Remember, do not soak the cabinets in water or cleaning solution. You must be careful with the cleaning to protect the paint and/or the cabinet’s finish.
    • The small toothbrush is for door handles, small tight areas, or crevices.
    • Do not let the water stick onto the hinges; have a dry microfiber towel ready for drips.
  3. Use the degreaser to remove the grease.
  4. Place towels on the floors to protect the kitchen floors.
  5. Spray the product directly into the cabinets and pay extra attention to the amount coming out from the sprayer. Make sure not to soak the cabinet.
  6. Wipe top to bottom using the sponge this time.
  7. For deep cleaning, the sponge is a good tool. It can absorb the degreaser better than the terry towel.
  8. To avoid spreading the grease, no zigzag wiping here. Straight top-down motion with the sponge.
  9. Once the grease residue is gone. Rinse the cabinets using the cleaning towel, submerge the towel in warm water, wring dry the towel, and wipe each cabinet to remove the degreaser remnant.
  10. Lastly, dry each cabinet.

Protect your cabinet from grease and dirt. Do not skip the regular touch-up cleaning, do the once or twice-a-year deep cleaning.

  3. Once the fridge is empty, remove the shelves. Use warm water and dish soap to clean the refrigerator. Submerge the sponge in the solution and wipe the inside of the fridge from top to bottom. Wash the removable shelves using the water and soap solution from the sink. Loosen any hardened food stain using the sponge or the small brush. Rinse with fresh warm water using the sponge. Dry the refrigerator using a microfiber cleaning cloth. Replace the old baking soda with a new, freshly open box.
  4. To finish up, clean the top of the refrigerator and the front. Pay extra attention to the door handle. Use a damp, wet microfiber cleaning cloth to remove the dirt. Plug the refrigerator and return the food. Now you have a happy refrigerator.

1. Cook With Care

Fourty-seven percent of home fires start while cooking, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Although cooking with care is always important, it can be easy to neglect caution during the chaotic holiday preparations. More cooks – and more pots – in the kitchen can increase the risk of a fire. On Thanksgiving Day 2015, fire departments reported 1,760 cooking-related home fires, a 259 percent increase over a typical day, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). On Christmas Day and Christmas Eve the same year, the numbers of cooking fires were 72 and 52 percent higher than normal, respectively.
Be sure to stay in the kitchen when you have something cooking on the stovetop or in the oven. The NFPA recommends keeping pan lids close by so that if a fire starts you can quickly cover it with the lid and remove the pan from the burner. When food preparation is finished, turn off the burners and remove the pans, as the stovetop can remain hot.

2. Pay Attention to Indoor Decorations

When decorating indoors, test all lights and cords and replace any faulty products before use. Hang indoor lights with clips rather than nails to avoid damaging cords and never use decorations intended for outdoor use only inside your home. If you burn candles indoors, keep them away from children and always extinguish them before you leave the room or go to sleep.

Keep the cords and lights away from snow or standing water and avoid damage to the cord's insulation by ensuring it is not pinched in doors or windows or placed under furniture. 4. Don't Forget Lighters and Matches

An open flame can pose serious risks if handled improperly. Always keep lighters, matches, and other fire-starting materials away from children. Make sure holiday guests who smoke do so outside and properly dispose of cigarette butts and ashes – by dampening cigarette butts before throwing them in the trash, for example.
Exercise caution if using a fireplace or an outdoor fire pit. Gathering family and friends around a fire can be a cozy, enjoyable way to experience the colder weather but make sure you place the fire pit at least 10 feet away from your home or other structures and don't use it in windy weather, as the fire can quickly spread outside the intended area.

  • For dishwashers made in the past 10 years, simply scrape off food. You do not need to rinse. This wastes water. Many dishwashers have a "quick rinse" setting that will take the place of rinsing in the sink (and, again, save water.)
  • Don’t overload the dishwasher. Make sure the dirty part of every dish, bowl, plate and glass has a clear path to the sprayer arm.
  • It’s safer to put knives and forks head down in the cutlery bin, but they get cleaner head up.
  • Speaking of cutlery, don’t "nest." Meaning, don’t put spoons with spoons and forks with forks. Mix them up so they get cleaner.
  • Load dishes along the back and sides so that they face the middle of the dishwasher.
  • Glassware, coffee mugs and plastic ware should go on the top rack. There is higher water pressure on the bottom which could break some glasses, and the water on the bottom is higher temperatures, which could melt the plastic.
  • Empty the bottom rack first so that any water that pools in the glass and cups bottoms doesn’t spill onto the dry dishes.

The laundry detergent provides chemical energy. Next, let’s see what happens when we add mechanical energy.

Inside a washing machine, clothes move back and forth rubbing together with other items. This is mechanical energy. The rubbing actions helps to loosen the stain and free it from the surface of our shirt. When you look in your washing machine and see laundry moving, you are watching mechanical energy in action.

Mechanical energy can even be created by hand.

The final type of energy is thermal energy.

Thermal energy means temperature. Warm or hot water can help the stain dissolve quicker. While warm water can help speed things along, most laundry detergents today can work just as well at colder temperatures.

All three types of energy need the right amount of time to work best. The more one type of energy is used, the less others are needed.

For example, delicate clothes would be damaged by the mechanical energy of the washing machine and hotter water. So instead, we can use chemical energy—detergents—and increase time to get them clean.

Which Should You Do?

Is Your Home Ready For The Holiday Season | TMG Companies

Pre-holiday cleaning is very similar to Spring cleaning, but with the extra task of cleaning for the back to back holidays. It would help to keep these holidays in mind when you decide to clean and de-clutter.

Fall cleaning is usually done around October to November when the leaves start to fall. It’s when the crunchy leaves, some rain, and pumpkins become part of the daily scene—the time of year when you like to stay home with the family in front of the fireplace. So this is the time to deep clean the house, specifically the pantry, fridge, and patio.

Cleaning the pantry

Why clean the pantry? The holiday season is fast approaching; you will shop for food for the festivities. That includes new can goods and other pantry staples. Before you shop, clean up the pantry. Remove the clutter, check the dates on the can goods, and throw away the old spices. Once you get rid of the unwanted goods, use the vacuum. Pay attention to the corners and use the vacuum to remove the dust and food debris. Mop the floors. Organize the pantry.

Cleaning the fridge

Like the pantry, you must check for expired foods, from ketchup to old forgotten leftovers. You must make space for the holiday foods. Remove everything out of the fridge and clean the shelves one at a time. Use the sink to wash the removable shelves from top to bottom. Use a combination of water and a few drops of dish soap as a cleaning solution. Wipe clean the inside of the fridge. Let air dry to lessen the odor.
